An
Edged-Weapon Self-Defense System Developed by Michael D. Janich
Because of the demands of my full-time position with Spyderco and my involvement in The Best Defense TV series, my teaching activities will now focus on larger, less frequent events, like the annual Martial Blade Camp. Although I will still remain available for seminars, that availability will be limited. Please contact me directly for inquiries regarding my availability. The seminar schedule posted here will remain the official listing of my teaching schedule.
For those interested in learning more about MBC or sponsoring a seminar in your area, I encourage you to contact my Certified, Associate, and Affiliate Instructors to organize training events with them. Contact information for MBC instructors is included on the Contact page of this web site.
Michael Janich’s “Street Skills” seminar is both a modular and an integrated approach to developing practical personal defense skills. Drawing from the skill sets highlighted in the popular “Best Defense” television show, it features instructional modules that focus on the defensive use of the knife (Janich’s acclaimed Martial Blade Concepts curriculum), practical unarmed skills (Damithurt Silat), empty-hand defenses against weapons (Counter-Blade Concepts), and the defensive use of impact weapons, including flashlights, sticks, and canes. These instructional modules will focus on these topics, while at the same time identifying and developing the body mechanics, leverages, patterns of motion, and reactive principles that serve as “common ground” to all of these skill sets. This approach enables students to develop practical, usable, and highly retainable skills in a very short time and allows them to easily adapt these skills to different weapons and circumstances.
